The 2022 New Jersey Youth Tobacco Survey (NJYTS) measured the use of cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco (SLT), snus, hookah, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), and nicotine pouches. In a typical administration year, approximately 50 public New Jersey high schools and several classrooms within each school are randomly selected to participate. In 2022, 70% of selected schools agreed to participate, and 75% of selected students consented and completed questionnaires for an overall participation rate of 52.5%. Prior to analysis, the data were adjusted for nonresponse and weighted to produce statewide prevalence estimates while accounting for the complex survey design.
As the first electronic survey administration of the NJYTS, we caution the reader not to compare the findings of the 2022 NJYTS with previous paper and pencil NJYTS administrations.
